Australian Quarantine ——
What is the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service?
- Australia is an island continent. It has many unique animal and plant species. Australians have chosen to protect these species as best they can for the people of this country and the rest of the world.
- People coming into Australia can hence do their part in helping us to protect Australia from human diseases, exotic plants and animal pests and diseases from other countries.
- The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is the Federal Australian Government's Agency assigned to this difficult task. The Australian community and AQIS work closely together to achieve the stated objective.
- AQIS provides quarantine inspection services for the arrival of international passengers, cargo, mail, animals products and plants into Australia. The men and women who work for AQIS are on duty 24 hours a day, every day of the year at Australian airports and seaports.
- Many countries have pests and diseases that could have a disastrous effect on Australia's animals and plants. So far, we've managed to keep most of these pests and diseases out of Australia.
For more information on pests and diseases of quarantine concern you can find more information on the AQIS website
